Company Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd was set up by Tun Dr.Mahathir bin Mohamad on his idea to the president during his visit to Mitsubishi in 1981. Then in February 1982, a project team was established in the Heavy Industry Corporation of Malaysia Berhad (HICOM) for research and signed an agreement with Mitsubishi. Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff has terminated his contract on July 25, 2005, shortly after he raised the issue of APs issued to the detriment of the local car market. Tengku Mahaleel under management for seven years, Proton has been able to increase production capacity, producing its own cars and collect the cash profits of more than RM4 billion. A total of RM1.7 billion from the amount used to build the Proton plant in Tanjong Malim. Within four months after the termination of the contract Tengku Mahaleel, heard rumors Proton closure. This is surprising because Proton assets including real estate in Batu 3, Shah Alam worth billions, not including the RM4 billion cash flow would be more than sufficient to cover operating costs. In 2006, Proton Holdings has announced subsidarinya Proton Capital Sdn Bhd has entered into a sale of a 57.75% of MV Agusta which was purchased in 2004 at € 1 (RM4.50). MV Agusta Purchases made with the knowledge that he has a debt of € 230 million, which was postponed for 3 years. Reaction to the sales counter of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former managing director of Proton, Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff who questioned whether it is sold openly allowing a more expensive price possible. Proton addition is also reported to suffer losses due to selling cars at a discount estimated at RM108 million. (According to 54.000 cars for 3 months and X cuts RM2, 000 a), which is characterized by Tengku Mahaleel as Proton's strategic mistakes.
